Is my home suitable for solar panels?

Before installing a solar PV system, it’s important to check whether your home is a good fit. In most cases, the answer is yes — but factors like roof space, direction, and shading all play a role.

Your home may be suitable if:

  • Your roof has at least 15–20m² of clear, unshaded space
  • It's south-, east- or west-facing
  • The roof is structurally sound and accessible
  • You have daytime electricity usage, such as working from home or running appliances regularly

A professional installer will carry out a full site assessment and confirm the best panel layout and system size.

What to check before installing solar panels

✅ Roof condition:
Your roof should be in good condition before panels are mounted. If your roof is older or showing signs of wear, it might be worth addressing repairs before installation. Solar panels can last 25+ years, so it’s important the roof underneath can last just as long.

✅ Shading and obstructions:
Check for trees, chimneys or nearby buildings that may cast shade over your roof during daylight hours. Even partial shading can impact system performance, though modern panel technology can help reduce these losses.

✅ BER rating and insulation:
If you're planning to apply for the SEAI grant, your home will need a Building Energy Rating (BER) of C or higher after installation. Consider upgrading insulation or windows as part of your energy improvement journey — this can help with grant eligibility and improve overall efficiency.

Apply for the SEAI grant

The SEAI Solar PV Grant offers up to €2,400 to homeowners installing solar panels. But to qualify, you must apply before starting any work.

Here’s what to do:

  1. Choose an SEAI-registered solar installer
  2. Submit your application online via the SEAI website
  3. Wait for grant approval before beginning installation
  4. Complete your installation
  5. Arrange a post-works BER assessment
  6. Submit documentation and receive your grant payment

Most installers will guide you through the full grant process.

Upgrade your meter (if needed)

To export unused electricity to the grid and benefit from the Clean Export Guarantee (CEG), you’ll need a smart meter installed by ESB Networks. If you haven’t already upgraded, your solar installer can help you arrange this — or you can request a free upgrade from ESB directly.

Smart meters also make it easier to track your solar production and usage in real-time.

Choose a registered solar installer

For a safe and grant-eligible installation, you must use a SEAI-registered solar PV installer. These professionals follow strict quality and safety standards, ensuring your system is installed correctly and performs efficiently.

A trusted installer will:

  • Survey your home
  • Design the right system for your needs
  • Handle the grant paperwork
  • Provide warranties and aftercare

Plan for the installation day

Installation usually takes 1–2 days, depending on the system size. Make sure your driveway or roof access is clear for installers. Inside your home, they’ll need access to your fuse board and hot press (if fitting a diverter or battery).

Ask your installer in advance if there’s anything you should prepare on the day.
